what would people say
Would they say I loved with all my heart
or behaved in selfish ways
Would they say I gave to others
or only took away
Would others say that I forgave
or held grudges everyday
Did I always have to get even
or could I walk away
What would others say
If I were to die today
Did I speak of others lovingly
or talk behind their backs
Or did I praise and value them
Not needing verbal payback
Was my attitude a pleasant one
that others wanted to be around
or was I always negative
without a friend to be found
When my life is over
and it's time to review
I hope that others say
"I know she loved you too"
I hope to leave a legacy
that speaks for who I am
I hope my words and actions
Prove I'm not a sham
I hope when all is said and done
It is obvious to others
I was a loving friend and wife
and a very loving mother
My intentions were always from the heart
and my love was deep and true
I hope they say these words of me
as I bid adieu
Life is a gift
treat it as such
and live in such a way
That others would speak
in praise of you
If you were to die today
Maureen Hayes Feb. 7, 2013
This poem was written in memory of Berto Noah on 2/7/2013. I was inspired to reflect on these thoughts after hearing some
of the most inspiring and encouraging words that friends and family members shared as we gathered to support one another after hearing of the tragic and sad loss of Berto on Jan 26, 2013. I woke up the morning of Feb 7th questioning myself what others would say about me "if I were to die today." Berto made everyone want to be a better person. He led by example and his parents have every right to be so very proud of the young man he turned out to be. He had the most amazing smile and he lit up a room even before he entered! He was an instant friend to everyone he met. He loved everyone and everyone loved him.
Berto you were my inspiration for these words and you will be forever missed and forever loved.
